One of the greatest fast bowlers ever, Dennis Lillee once called him ‘once in a generation’ fast bowler. He was 17 then. By the time he retired from international cricket at 34, he had done enough to substantiate Lillee’s statement. He is none other than Mitchell Johnson — fast, furious and feared. Johnson carried the rich Australian legacy of fast bowling and earned the right to be named in the same breath with the likes of Jeff Thomson, Lillee, Brett Lee and others. Read more on Johnson’s retirement.
Now that he has retired, the tributes are pouring in from all quarters. His current and former team-mates, counterparts and other members of the cricket fraternity have sent in their congratulatory messages. On this occasion, Cricket Australia too decided to do something special for the brutal pacer. They have decided to produce the eighth instalment of hugely popular American franchise The Fast and the Furious, or simply Fast & Furious.
It is noteworthy here that Fast & Furious is a series of films, which has some iconic action scenes involving high-speed racing cars and a crew of dangerously fast drivers. Now, Cricket Australia did find a few similarities between the franchise and the game of cricket. They equated the crew with the Australian team, the protagonist with Johnson and needless to say, the high-octane action scenes with the happenings on the cricket field every-time Johnson and Australia dismantled the oppositions.
Everything’s in place; the budget, the requisite permissions, the shoot locations (WACA, Perth) and the star cast. Good news is that Johnson has agreed to play the protagonist, a fair decision considering he has retired now and has ample time to pursue other things. The film will go on floors soon and is expected to get the same amount of appreciation that the previous instalments have got globally. So, keep calm and await Fast & Furious 8!
Please note this is a humour article — work of pure fiction.
