The 17th Asian Games, officially known as XVII Asiad will take place over a period of 16 days in Incheon, Korea from September 19 to October 4, 2014. 13,000 athletes from 45 countries will participate in the vibrant event. A total of 439 events will be held in 36 sports. It will be the third time when Korea will host the high intensity event. The slogan of the event is “Diversity shines here”. It represents and highlights the significance of Asia’s wonderful diversity in history, cultures, and religions.
Many countries, including India are taking the opportunity at the Asian Games to prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio De Janeiro.
The 2014 Games is scheduled to feature the 28 Olympic sports which will be contested at the 2016 Summer Olympics. They are Aquatics (Diving, Swimming, Synchronized swimming, Water polo), Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball (Baseball, Softball), Basketball, Bowling, Boxing, Canoeing, Sprint, Slalom, Cricket, Cycling (BMX, Mountain bike, Road, Track), Equestrian (Dressage, Eventing, Jumping), Fencing, Field hockey, Football, Golf, Gymnastics (Artistic, Rhythmic, Trampoline), Handball, Judo, Kabaddi, Karate, Modern pentathlon, Rowing, Rugby sevens, Sailing, Sepaktakraw, Shooting, Squash, Table tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis (Tennis, Soft tennis), Triathlon, Volleyball (Beach volleyball, Volleyball), Weightlifting, Wrestling, Wushu.
In addition, eight non-Olympic sports will be featured: Baseball, ten-pin bowling, Cricket, Karate, Sepak Takraw, Squash and Wushu.
The medal design features the pentagon-shaped symbol representing the five ports of Incheon — Airport, Seaport, Teleport, Leisureport and Businessport, with emblem of Games inside. It symbolizes the city as the hub of Northeast Asia.
The medals tally of the Asian Games 2014 will be decided on the number of gold medals won by a nation. With the nations tied at gold medals, the second yardstick to measure is on the silver medals and then bronze. If the teams are still tied, they would be given equal ranking and will be listed alphabetically by IOC country code.
