Unarguably, Don Bradman is the greatest batsman the game has seen. He finished his career with 29 Test hundreds and since then the number holds a special place in the annals of cricket. England skipper Alastair Cook, a modern great reached his 29th Test century on the Day 1 of the second Test between England and Pakistan at Old Trafford.
Bradman got his 29th hundred in the same country but a different venue. It was Leeds where the master scored his final Test hundred. Both were leading their sides and Cook got to the mark on July 22, 2016, while co-incidentally the Test in which Bradman got to the mark too started on the same day in the year 1948. Coming back to the current Test, Cook once again stood in the middle to save his team after opener Alex Hales fell early. Vice-captain Joe Root too supported his skipper well and scored a ton. The duo added 185 runs together before falling to Mohammad Amir. This was also Cook’s 11th hundred as captain for England and he equalled the tally of Graham Gooch, who has as many as England captain.
Few of the current and former cricketers on social media lauded both Root and Cook’s batting. Here are some tweets.
Century moment for @root66. Punch the air, raise your bat and kiss your helmet. Get in there https://t.co/5WE0iMRMsj

#Root is up there too! Top 5 for sure! Well batted, buddy!

A really fine hundred from Root, his 10th. Pretty flawless from start to now. When he’s in this mood there is no better. Really good watch.

Joe Root’s 10th Test hundred and first since his masterpiece at the Wanderers in Johannesburg back in January – has come in 167 balls — Chris Stocks (@StocksC_cricket) July 22, 2016
“Sonny-Jim” hundred for the skipper. #ENGvPAK

This is a masterclass in how to Bat in Test match cricket … Gameplans,Shot selection … #CaptainCook #Rrrrrrrrooooooottttt — Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) July 22, 2016
In early 2000s, Steve Waugh was synonymous with mental strength. Today it is Alastair Cook #bbccricket

Take a bow Alastair Cook! What a player! He’s copped so much over the years, for me there’s nobody as mentally strong in world cricket!#ENGvPAK — James Taylor (@jamestaylor20) July 22, 2016
What an achievement from cook! Most people don’t even make 50 matches that play for their country, so fifty 50’scome on England! #ENGvPAK

Cook loves a stat, I’ve heard. He’s just become the 1st batsman in Tests to be out for 105 four times. On 3: Ponting, Kallis, Sangakkara. — Andy Zaltzman (@ZaltzCricket) July 22, 2016
For those of you who are jumping up and down, I’m not saying Cook is better than Bradman, or even in his ballpark. OK?

Cook and Root are annoying in very different ways. Root has a Trumpian arrogance and Cook a Cruzian cussedness — Nadir Hassan (@Nadir_Hassan) July 22, 2016
Century moment for Alastair Cook. Raw emotion after first ton since that 263 vs Pakistan last year https://t.co/Drhjam0CmS
— England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 22, 2016
Sure Cook’s been the fluent zoned in version of Cook. But it’s really Root holding back his natural game which has been most impressive — Hassan Cheema (@mediagag) July 22, 2016
I often think Alastair Cook should be playing the hero in a Jane Austen adaptation. Probs more Darcy than Knightley. #ENGvPAK

Cook’s only 31. If he plays 6-7 years more could finish with 15000-plus Test runs! — Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) July 22, 2016
Cook just keeps dishing up centuries. Looking forward to seeing him play 5 tests on turning tracks in India. Will be a different challenge.

Cook draws alongside a certain Australian called Don Bradman on the all-time list with that 29th Test hundred — Chris Stocks (@StocksC_cricket) July 22, 2016
Alastair Cook’11 hundreds when leading England equal the most by an England captain in Tests. Graham Gooch also made 11. #ENGvPAK

Cook reaches his 29th Test ton and celebrates with feeling. First ton since his epic in Abu Dhabi and been hugely impressive today 190-1 — Dean Wilson (@CricketMirror) July 22, 2016
That celebration as outgoing as you’ll see Cook. Plenty of emotion coming out. First ton in 20 inns #ENGvPAK

That’s Cook’s 13th Test hundred in England. Only Boycott (14), Bell, Pietersen and, as ever, Gooch (all 15) ahead of him #stats — Daniel Brigham (@dan_brigham) July 22, 2016
