In an attempt to stop people from cashing in on the death of Australian batsman Phil Hughes, Cricket Australia (CA) trademarked the phrase “63 not out”.

As reported by Yahoo Australia, last week representatives of CA and its legal representatives were in discussions with Hughes’ family and management, after which an agreement was reached that. CA’s main concern was unlicensed memorabilia.

CA applied to have the phrase “63 not out” trademarked under the name. It was the score Hughes had reached before he got injured at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), which eventually led to his demise.

A spokesman said, “Cricket Australia registered the trademark in conjunction with Phillip’s management purely as a defensive registration to prevent others trying to exploit Phillip’s memory. There was some evidence of that starting to occur which is why we have taken this action.”
