New South Wales cricketer Daniel Hughes was rushed to hospital after suffering a hit to the back of his neck, underneath his helmet while batting for Northern Districts against Blacktown in a first grade cricket match at Mark Taylor Oval on Saturday.

Daniel is a former team-mate of deceased Australian batsman Phil Hughes, who passed away almost two months back after being hit in the similar region during a Sheffield Shield match in Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Like Phil, Daniel too is a left-handed batsman.

Daniel, 25, is a promising young batsmen and boyfriend of Nine TV reporter Erin Molan. He was left unconscious after suffering a direct hit.

As reported by Daily Telegraph, the impact of the ball on Daniel’s neck was millimetres from the same artery which killed Phil.

Daniel, who plays for Sydney Thunder in Big Bash League (BBL), suffered a concussion. He dropped his hands onto his knees as team-mates and opposition rushed towards his aid.

Northern Districts president Mike Langford said, “His neck was swelling up and we thought ‘oh God’,’’

A stunned Molan was quoted as saying, “I got a call saying he’s been hit in the head with a ball, he’s collapsed and there’s an ambulance on the way, you’ve got to get here. I don’t think I’ve ever been so scared in my life.’’

Daniel underwent a series of tests and was later cleared of any major damage. Daniel has played a lot of cricket growing up with Phil through the juniors. He was also present with Molan at Phil’s funeral in Macksville last month.

Langford confirmed, “We got him in the club room and then we called an ambulance. He had CT scans and that came back with some good news saying there’s no burst (artery).”
