On June 9, exactly 48 years ago, Geoff Boycott scored 246 not out for England in a Test match against India at Leeds. England won the Test comfortably, but Boycott was dropped for the next Test.

Though Boycott was the highest scorer for either side by a long way, he did not win the Batsmen of the match – there was no Man of the match award. That award was shared by three players: Ken Barrington who scored 93 off 187 balls, Basil D’Oliveria who scored 109 off 183 balls and MAK Pataudi who top-scored in either innings — 64 in the India first innings and, following on, 148 off 348 balls. Boycott, whose unbeaten 246 came off 555 balls, was dropped because his innings was seen as selfish and against the interests of his team. He was thus dropped from the next Test. In fact, in the England second innings he did not get to bat as lower-order batsmen were sent ahead of him.

Manoj Roshanta on Twitter tweeted about the knock on its anniversary and tagged Boycott. The passage of time has not healed Boycott’s hurt from his axing. He replied to the tweet by making an uncharitable remark against the then chairman of the selectors, a former England player who is now 89 years old.
