New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee on Friday joined bowlers Winston Davis (West Indies), Andy Bichel (Australia) and Glenn McGrath (Australia), who have taken seven wickets in a World Cup tournament.

The right-arm fast bowler destroyed England’s batting with career-best figures of seven for 33. The carnage started in the fifth over when Southee first removed Ian Bell. He bowled a beautiful delivery to Bell, which angled in and hit the top of the off stump. His next victim Moeen Ali smashed him for three boundaries in the fifth over. But Southee had the last laugh when he got him in the seventh over. It was a bouncer to get rid of a player who doesn’t like bouncers; the ball took the edge of the bat and hit the stumps. ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: Full Coverage

Southee had to wait sometime for his next five victims. He was brought back into the attack in the 27th over and soon made an impact to restrict England to a paltry score. Southee bowled an outswinging yorker to James Taylor and cleaned up the off stump. The next two batsmen were out in the 29th over; first it was Jos Buttler, who fell to a lovely outswinging delivery which he edged it to the keeper. Three balls later, he got Chris Woakes to an unplayable delivery. Yet another outswing delivery which hit the top of the off stump to give Southee his fifth wicket.

He then picked up Stuart Broad in the 31st over, a leading edge to a full ball which carried to the mid-off fielder Daniel Vettori. His last wicket was of Steve Finn, in the 33rd over. He bowled an outswinger and Finn edged it to the slip fielder, Ross Taylor.

He thus completed his career best figures and equaled the World Cup record of seven wickets. Southee also registered the best figures from a New Zealand bowler beating Shane Bond’s six for 19 which came in 2005 against India.

Figures of the bowlers who have taken seven wickets in World Cup:

Winston Davis: 7-51 in 1983 VS Australia

Andy Bichel: 7-20 in 2003 VS England

Glenn McGrath: 7-15 in 2003 VS Namibia

Tim Southee: 7-33 in 2015 VS England

Winning the toss and batting first, England only managed a score of 123 runs while New Zealand chased it down in just 12.2 overs after a smashing innings from captain Brendon McCullum, who scored 77 runs in just 25 balls.
