Afghanistan have replaced Merwais Ashraf with Shafiqullah Shafiq in their ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 squad. Merwais was forced to pull out of the World Cup due to a side strain. He was a part of Afghanistan’s team that played Sri Lanka on Sunday. He is one of their most dependable bowlers, as his nagging medium pace causes problems for the batsmen. His loss may dent them a touch as they lose a reliable player.  ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: POINTS TABLE

The Event Technical Committee has approved of the change in the team, as a press release by the International Cricket Council (ICC) stated. Merwais has taken 28 wickets in his 30 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), but an important stat is that he goes at only 4.14 runs an over. That is proof of his containing skills, as he bowls crucial spells in the middle overs.  ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: SCHEDULE & MATCH DETAILS

Interestingly, Shafiqullah is a wicketkeeper-batsman and has replaced a medium-pace bowling all-rounder. Afghanistan’s next game is against Scotland at Dunedin on Thursday. They then travel to Perth to play Australia on March 4. So far, Afghanistan have lost both their matches, but came close to upsetting Sri Lanka in a tight game.
