Opening their batting at 74 for the loss of no wickets, Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott slammed respective half-centuries as the duo were involved in a 125 runs partnership for the first wicket. Cook slammed his 39th Test half-century, while Trott brought his 19th Test half-century. However, the partnership was cut short by a beautiful legbreak delivery by Devendra Bishoo, which was well complimented by Jermaine Blackwood at second slip. Trott tried to drive the ball which fel on off-stump but it edged and Blackwood dived and took a brilliant catch as he ended Trott’s innings at 59.

There were two big appeals for out. Both the times, Cook was the victim. First the ball brushed the thigh pads and landed in Denesh Ramdin‘s hand. Second time, Bishoo bowled a beautiful delivery and appealed for leg before. The umpire declined the appeal, but Ramdin decided to review the decision. The replays showed that the ball went and hit the top of the middle stump and it was given the umpire’s call.

Blackwood, on the other hand, was struck by Cook’s shot. The ball went and hit his hip. However, no harm was done and the physio did not had to much.

Ramdin has used five bowlers, making Kemar Roach, Jason Holder and even Marlon Samuels bowl in the morning session of the third day along with Bishoo. Shanon Gabriel was the other bowler.

The first two days were halted multiple times by rain. West Indies were bowled out for 299 on second day of the first Test. The final wicket partnership of 52 runs between Bishoo and Shanon Gabriel, helped the home side extend their lead.

Apart from Marlon Samuels, no other West Indian batsmen could do much with the bat. Samuels, who scored his 17th Test century, was dismissed shortly after he brought about his hundred.

For England, once again, Stuart Broad led the bowling attack by taking four wickets. James Anderson and Chris Jordan took two wickets each.

Brief scores:

West Indies 299 (Darren Bravo 35, Marlon Samuels 103; Stuart Broad 4 for 61) lead England 143/1 (Alastair Cook 67*, Jonathan Trott 59, Gary Ballance 7*; Devendra Bishoo 1 for 40) by 156 runs.
