James Faulkner hunted down the 16 runs off the first three deliveries required by Hobart Hurricanes to win in the final over, sealing a thrilling four-wicket win against Perth Scorchers in an entertaining Big Bash League clash on Friday.
In a successful chase of 178, Faulkner struck an unbeaten 28 off 20 after a masterful 69 off 39 from George Bailey at the Perth Stadium.
Andrew Tye, who bowled the final over, was left heartbroken as Faulkner deposited the first delivery of over fine leg for a six and followed that with a one-bounce four over long-on. With the equation more manageable, Faulkner was in no mood to waste any more time as he lifted the third delivery over the bowler’s head to seal a nail-biting victory.

Before Faulkner stole the show, it was Bailey who scored his second half-century in three matches to bring Hurricanes back in the hunt. They had lost their in-form opening pair Matthew Wade (8) and D’Arcy Short (13) inside the Powerplay overs. No. 3 Caleb Jewell played a good hand, hitting 32 off 20 but was out in the seventh over. By 13th over, the visitors had lost half their side when Bailey and Faulkner joined hands.
Bailey struck six fours and three sixes to revive the chase but Tye brought Scorchers back in the contest when he had the veteran caught in the 18th over.
Before his heroics with the bat, Faulkner had blown away Scorchers top-order within his first seven deliveries leaving them 7/3 in 2.1 overs. He removed both the openers – Cameron Bancroft (0) and Michael Klinger (0) – in the very first over after Hurricanes opted to field. Then he bowled captain Ashton Turner with the first delivery of his second over to leave Scorchers reeling.
Sam Whiteman top-scored with 68 off 44 while handy contributions from Nathan Coulter-Nile (31*), Hilton Cartwright (29) and Andrew Tye (25) pushed them to a competitive 177/9.
