At the moment, Mohammed Shami is taking a vacation from cricket. He was the leading wicket-taker of the 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup, when we last saw him in action. However, he was unable to participate in the South Africa trip due to a medical condition, and he will also be absent from the Afghanistan T20I series. The fast bowler has stated that he is working well and could be fit for the series, despite some rumors suggesting he would potentially miss the first two Test matches against England.

In recent years, Shami has consistently been India’s best bowler in the longer forms (Tests and ODIs). Although his Indian Premier League (IPL) achievements with the Gujarat Titans demonstrate his potential, nothing is known about his future as an international T20 player. When questioned about his future in the shortest format, Shami—who is due to get the Arjuna award—did not hesitate to acknowledge that he himself is unclear about it.

When India played England in the T20 World Cup last year, Shami played his final T20I for the Indian team. The selectors haven’t called up the seasoned pacer in the shortest format since then.

I’m never sure where I fit into the grand scheme of things when T20s are discussed. However, I think the IPL occurs before the T20 World Cup. Playing T20 matches prior to the World Cup can help you demonstrate your performance and rhythm, albeit I’m not sure what will happen. I’m up for selection if the team management likes what it sees,” he said to Sports Tak.

Now, a source suggests that Mohammed Shami and the BCCI may speak shortly about his future intentions.

“A conversation will be had with Shami to find out his future goals. Over the past few years, he has taken on a lot of work. This conversation was intended to take place in South Africa. The management and selectors will speak with him shortly because he did not go with the squad, a BCCI source was stated by the Times of India.
