Cricket has seen weird stoppages of play. The early tea break during the India-England Test Visakhapatnam Test due to a dog intrusion is fresh in our minds. Now on a day when pink and AB de Villiers (the man who averages over 97 donning pink) were the buzz, with South Africa team donning those colours to raise awareness for breast cancer, the buzz turned quite literal with bees coming into action. Sri Lanka were 117 for 4 in the 27th over in the 3rd ODI, when a swarm of bees made its presence at the Wanderers. Chris Morris was in middle of an over with the in-form Niroshan Dickwella at strike. The bees found a liking for Quinton de Kock and hovered around the South African wicketkeeper’s helmet for a while. Ground staff sprang into action with fire extinguishers and the battle of Wanderers commenced. The only teams not in action here were South Africa and Sri Lanka. From extinguishers to a professional beekeeper with honey-filled container made its way in the middle as bats and ball took a backseat.
By 4.20 pm local time, most of the bees were conquered and a re-start of play lurked around the corner but by then almost an hour’s play was lost. As bizarre as it gets but cricket has seen weirder things. You can read more.
While the crowd have been cheerful and have taken the act sportingly, this incident saw another buzz in the Twitter space. Read it to bee-live it:
