India’s wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan has been making headlines lately for opting out of the Ranji Trophy to focus on personal training ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Ishan, who has been absent from the Indian squad since pulling out of the South Africa tour due to mental fatigue, continues to refrain from cricketing obligations despite encouragement from head coach Rahul Dravid and other officials in the BCCI to return to the field.

Ishan received instructions from the BCCI management to participate in Jharkhand’s final Ranji Trophy Elite Group match against Rajasthan, commencing on February 16. However, the wicket-keeper batsman opted to skip this match. Similarly, pace bowler Deepak Chahar, who has also been absent from cricketing activities for some time, chose to disregard his Ranji Trophy commitments.

Recent reports indicated that Ishan Kishan has been training alongside Hardik and Krunal Pandya at the Reliance Stadium. Multiple reports have suggested that the BCCI is displeased with Ishan’s approach and has directed him to return to domestic cricket and rejoin Jharkhand’s Ranji Trophy squad. However, when Jharkhand announced their playing XI for the match against Rajasthan, Ishan’s name was notably absent.

Previously, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah emphasized that the board will not tolerate any defiance, emphasizing that young players who are not injured must participate in red-ball cricket for their state teams.

“They have already been informed via phone, and I will also be sending letters reiterating that if the chairman of selectors, coach, and captain request it, players must play red-ball cricket,” Shah stated.

“This directive applies to all centrally contracted players. We will not entertain any other excuses. This directive is applicable to all. If players are fit and young, they must play. Otherwise, the chairman of the selection committee has provided me with his recommendations, and I will grant him the autonomy to make his decisions independently,” he asserted.

India batsman Shreyas Iyer, who was not selected for the last three Tests against England, was also absent from the Mumbai XI. It remains unclear whether he is injured or simply unavailable for selection for the Ranji Trophy team.

The BCCI had specifically instructed these three players – Ishan Kishan, Deepak Chahar, and Shreyas Iyer – to participate in first-class cricket for their respective state teams.

With Ishan Kishan absent, Kumar Kushagra continued to fulfill the wicket-keeping duties for Jharkhand.

Jharkhand, who have only managed one win and accumulated 10 points from six matches so far, are currently playing against Rajasthan at home in their final round.

The consistent absence of Ishan Kishan from matches following his mid-tour return from the national team’s South Africa tour due to “travel fatigue” has raised concerns among influential figures in the Indian cricket establishment.
