Canada Global T20: JP Duminy-spurred Winnipeg eliminate Yuvraj Singh’s Nationals, Vancouver reach final

Winnipeg Hawks will meet Brampton Wolves in Qualifier 2 of the Canada GT20 on Saturday.

The Vancouver Knights have reached the final of the Canada Global T20 2019 by beating Brampton Wolves by a whopping 77 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method on Thursday. Put into bat, Knights posted 170/4 in their 16 overs and in reply the Wolves were bowled out for 103.

In the Eliminator of the GT20, Yuvraj Singh‘s Toronto Nationals were beaten on the Duckworth-Lewis method by Winnepeg Hawks by two runs thanks largely to a blinder from JP Duminy (85* off 41 balls). Yuvraj retired hurt on 8.

In Qualifier 1, Knights were helped to a match-winning total by a late assault from Andre Russell who hit 43 off 21 balls in a stand off 77 with Shoaib Malik, who remained not out on 46 from 26 balls. Russell hit four sixes and three fours in his innings.

Set a revised DLS target of 181 in 16 overs, Wolves were bowled out in 13.4 overs with only Colin Munro (62 off 25 balls) reaching double-figures. The next best score of the innings was fellow New Zealander Ish Sodhi’s 9. Leading the damage for Knights was Saad Bin Zafar who took 4/22 in his four overs, backed by Hayden Walsh who took the wickets of Lendl Simmons and Babar Hayat.

In the GT20 Eliminator, South African wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen clubbed 11 fours and five sixes in his unbeaten 106 off 49 balls. That set up Nationals’ total of 238/5, with help from the opener Rodrigo Thomas who made 73 from 40 balls.

Chasing a revised DLS target of 200 in 17.1 overs, Winnepeg were declared winners by two runs when they ended on 201/5 in 17.1 overs. From 49/3 after four overs, they were carried by former South Africa allrounder Duminy, Sunny Sohal (36 off 29) and skipper Rayad Emrit (33* off 15) to seal a nail-biting win.

Duminy hit eight fours and fives sixes while Emrit’s cameo stunned Nationals.

Nationals will now play Hawks on Saturday in Qualifier 2.
