Former England Women’s captain Charlotte Edwards has been roped in by South Australia, as they get set for the title defence of their Women’s National Cricket League. Edwards, who retired from international cricket, after serving England for 20 years, played last for England in the ICC World T20 2016, as her team suffered defeat against Australia Women in the semi-final in March. She has also represented England in 23 Tests, 191 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 95 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), as her records remain unparalleled in the women’s division. She is also the leading run-scorer in ODIs (5,992) and T20Is (2,605), as she was still in fine form while playing for England in the World T20, and finished as the top run scorer for England in the tournament. “I’m really excited about this opportunity with South Australia, especially with the growth of women’s cricket in Australia at an all-time high. The lure of training and playing at Adelaide Oval was an opportunity too good to refuse and off the back of last year’s title, I want to help them achieve sustained success,” said Edwards to cricket.com.au. Having played earlier for Western Australia, and also in the squad for Perth Scorchers in the 2015-16’s inaugural edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), it is also likely that she could be in the squad for the Adelaide Strikers in the upcoming season of the tournament. She is also known for her fine leadership qualities, as she is a fine batsman as well, while the experience could indeed come very handy, following Lauren Ebsary’s retirement form domestic circuit in June 2016. Edwards to commentate in ENG vs PAK Women series
“I came to know Charlotte during my time as CEO of the MCC and have always admired her as a cricketer and role model. She is one of the great icons of world cricket and we are delighted to have signed her. Her experience within cricket but more importantly with her leadership qualities will be wonderful for the Breezair SA Scorpions squad and for our women’s program.” said Keith Bradshaw, Chief Executive of SACA.
Although the South Australians are yet to officially announce their skipper for the upcoming season, Edwards is certain to be having joining a talent-studded side, including the likes of Megan Schutt and Sarah Coyte. The side also includes top young talents like Amanda Wellington, Alex Price, Bridget Patterson and Tahlia McGrath. There are also a couple of rookies in the side, as the likes of Brooke Harris and Jordan Doecke.
