Cheteshwar Pujara achieved a rare achievement in Test cricket during the first match between India and Sri Lanka, at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. He batted on all five days of the Test. In doing so, he became only the ninth cricketer to achieve the feat. Despite India conceding a 124-run first innings lead, they came agonisingly close to winning the Test. However, this isn’t about that.
Here’s the list of batsmen who batted on all five days of a Test.
Player | Scores | Opposition | Venue | Season |
ML Jaisimha (India) | 20*, 74 | Australia | Kolkata | 1959-60 |
Geoffrey Boycott (England) | 107, 80* | Australia | Nottingham | 1977 |
Kim Hughes (Australia) | 117, 84 | England | Lord’s | 1980 |
Allan Lamb (England) | 23, 110 | West Indies | Lord’s | 1984 |
Ravi Shastri (India) | 111, 7* | England | Kolkata | 1984-85 |
Adrian Griffith (West Indies) | 114, 18 | New Zealand | Hamilton | 1999-00 |
Andrew Flintoff (England) | 70, 51 | India | Mohali | 2005-06 |
Alviro Peterson (South Africa) | 156, 39 | New Zealand | Wellington | 2011-12 |
Cheteshwar Pujara (India) | 52, 22 | Sri Lanka | Kolkata | 2017-18 |

In 2015, Pujara also became an entrant to the ‘carrying-the-bat’ club. He finds himself in this rare list. It is interesting to note that India, England and New Zealand are the only three nations he attained these feats. More weird is the Kolkata connection.
TRENDING NOW
India features in the list four times, out of which, on three instances the venue has been Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Over three decades back, it was Pujara’s national coach, Ravi Shastri who achieved the same feat against the touring Englishmen at the same venue.
