CLT20 2013: Alister McDermott’s four-wicket haul keeps Trinidad and Tobago to low total

Denesh Ramdin's (48 off 38 balls)  solitary efforts were not enough to guide Trinidad and Tobago to a good total as regular wickets helped the Brisbane Heat restrict the opposition to 135 for nine in the first group B match of the Champions League T20 2013. Alister McDermott (four for 37 ) was the pick of the bowlers, with Nathan Hauritz (two for 22), Ben Cutting (one for 24) and Daniel Christian (one for 12) chipping in.

Denesh Ramdin‘s (48 off 38 balls) solitary efforts were not enough to guide Trinidad and Tobago to a good total as regular wickets helped the Brisbane Heat restrict the opposition to 135 for nine in the first group B match of the Champions League T20 2013. Alister McDermott (four for 37 ) was the pick of the bowlers, with Nathan Hauritz (two for 22), Ben Cutting (one for 24) and Daniel Christian (one for 12) chipping in.

James Hopes won the toss and put Trinidad & Tobago in to bat and opened the bowling himself. The West Indian swagger was on display right from the start as Ervin Lewis pulled a short delivery to the boundary. Lendl Simmons joined the party in the second over when he smashed a full delivery over point for a boundary.

However, their flashy approach was curtailed by the fall of three quick wickets. Simmons was offered width by Alister McDermott and the former took the areal route and slammed three consecutive boundaries but failed to negotiate a straighter delivery and play the ball onto the stumps. The next wicket came in the following over when Darren Bravo was undone by Kemar Roach’s pace and failed to stay out of a short delivery. The leading edge went straight to the wicketkeeper. In the following over, Lewis’s onslaught came to an end as another leading edge went straight to the square-leg fielder, giving McDermott his second wicket.

Skipper Ramdin came on and started by hitting two boundaries off Roach and brought up the team’s total of 50 in the seventh over. Hopes mixed his bowlers around and brought on Ben Cutting and Nathan Hauritz. Just when Ramdin and Jason Mohammad were starting to settle down a double strike from Hauritz put the West Indian outfit on the backfoot again. Hauritz, who bowled his first two overs from around the wicket, came over the stumps and struck first ball to break the partnership by getting rid of Mohammad who hit the ball straight down the throat of the long-off fielder.

He went back to around the wicket to the new-man Sherwin Ganga and bowled a full deliver which the latter hit back to the bowler to go back for a first-ball duck. At this stage the Trinidad & Tobago were on 71 for five in the 11th over.

The fifth wicket brought out 17-year-old Nicolas Pooran, the youngest to play the tournament. The Heat pulled things back by some disciplined bowling, giving away just six runs in three overs after picking the fifth wicket. Pooran who managed to hit a boundary off Daniel Christian was caught out in the same over after opening the face of his bat and hitting the ball straight to the point fielder.

Ramdin fought on as he vowed to keep his side in the game. He made room and scored a boundary and followed it up with what can be called the shot of the innings. Cutting bowled a full delivery and Ramdin move his front leg out of the way and put enormous power behing his heave over long on. He found an able ally in Sunil Narine as the duo added 31 runs off just 21 deliveries for the seventh wicket.

However, the trend of losing wickets at regular intervals continued as Cutting dismissed Narine in the 18th over. Trinidad and Tobago were in further trouble when Ramdin was dismissed just two deliveries later.

An eventful final over where Samuel Badree slammed two sixes helped Trinidad and Tobago reach 135 for nine.

Brief scores:

Trinidad and Tobago 135 for 9 in 20 overs (Denesh Ramdin 48; Alister McDermott 4 for 37) vs Brisbane Heat
