CLT20 2013: Ryan ten Doeschate’s all-round performance helps Otago Volts beat Kandurata Maroons by 6 wickets

Ryan ten Doeschate, who landed today in India, powered Otago Volts to comfortable six-wicket win over Kandurata Maroons at the Punjab Cricket Association Ground, Mohali on Wednesday.
The feature of ten Doeschate’s batting was his fierce hitting. The 32-ball 64 by ten Doeschate had measured hitting and calculated approach. He was hell bent on taking quick singles and looked for twos on at a stadium which is big. The deep fielders were always on their toes.
Kaushal Lokuarachchi was smashed for three consecutive sixes by ten Doeschate that deterred the spirits of the Sri Lankan franchise.
Otago opener Hamish Rutherford scored a quickfire 15-ball 20 but fell while trying to take on Suraj Randiv. After his wicket Neil Broom and Brendon McCullum played themselves in. McCullum was dismissed when he overbalanced after missing Dilhara Lokuhettige's delivery. He was stumped adroitly by Kumar Sangakkara.
Broom was dismissed when he tried to break the shackles against Lokuhettige. He was dismissed for 26-ball 25 which included two sixes. He stitched a partnership of 44 with ten Doeschate with the latter taking the mantle of scoring quickly. After Broom's dismissal James Neesham helped the Otago all-rounder by taking singles. The duo added a decisive 57 off 30 balls. That was game-changing moment.
Earlier, Kandurata’s innings was powered by Upul Tharanga’s 56-ball 76 that included six fours and three sixes. He stepped onto the accelerator after a slow start. The first set of powerplay overs yielded 25 runs. Tharanga ensured Kandurata got a solid platform to setup a good score. The momentum was broken by ten Doeschate who picked up big-hitting Lokuhettige and then dismissed captain Lahiru Thirimanne in his two overs. He finished with two for nine in his 12 legitimate balls.
An Ian Butler over — the 18th of the innings pegged back Kandurata’s momentum. Three wickets and three runs of the over ensured that Kandurata were not able to finish well.
In the end a total of 154 was below-par. Otago chased down the total comfortably courtesy of ten Doeschate who showed no signs of clumsiness after a long journey to Mohali — a place where he was the ruler on Wednesday.
