Colin Muro starred with his unbeaten 73 as New Zealand beat Bangladesh by 15 runs in the one-off T20 International at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Needing 205 runs to win, the hosts got off to a poor start as Tim Southee dismissed both their openers in the first over of the innings. Mominul Haque too followed soon as he top edged a short-pitched delivery by Mitchell McClenaghan to Kyle Mills.

However, skipper Mushfiqur Rahim resurrected their innings with a fine 29-ball half-century before perishing off the bowling of Corey Anderson.

Bangladesh were always in the hunt as far as the run-rate was concerned. However, they continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. However, handy contributions by Nasir Hossain, Mahmuddulah and Sohag Gazi got them close to the total.

Earlier, Munro slammed 39-ball 73 not out while Devcich clobbered 10 boundaries and a six to score 31-ball 59, leading New Zealand’s charge in the game. Devcich set the tone early on, taking the attack to the opposition and not allowing the Bangladesh bowlers to settle down.

Left-handed Devcich cracked two boundaries in the first over off Mashrafe Mortaza and followed it up with same results in the next two overs off Gazi and Mortaza.

In the fourth over of the innings, Devcich swatted two boundaries and a six as Bangladesh bowlers failed to contain the Kiwis’ opener, who took his side to a total of 48 for no loss after four overs.

New Zealand stuttered in the middle when they lost Devcich and Hamish Rutherford in quick succession, but Murno’s assault shook Bangladesh. The New Zealand batsman slammed two sixes each, Abdur Razzak and Mahmadullah in the 12th and the 13th over of the innings to put New Zealand in complete command.

Munro completed his half-century in 25 balls, in the 16th over of the match.

Brief scores:

New Zealand 204 for 5 in 20 overs (Anton Devcich 59, Colin Munro 73*; Ziaur Rehman 1 foe 26) beat Bangladesh 189 for 9 in 20 overs (Mushfiqur Rahim 50, Mahmudullah 34; Tim Southee 3 for 38) by 15 runs.
