Antigua: Australia kicked off their Super 8 campaign against Bangladesh at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium. Australia won the toss and invited Bangladesh to bat first.

The Aussies came into the match after topping Group B with 4 wins in as many games while Bangladesh had finished second in Group D behind South Africa with 6 points.

Bangladesh had the worst possible start as opener Tanzid Hasan was dismissed by Mitchell Starc for a duck on the third ball of the innings. Liton Das and skipper Najmul Shanto formed a good partnership to take Bangladesh’s score over 50 runs without losing another wicket. However, Das lost his wicket to Adam Zampa and the partnership was broken. The Aussie leg-spinner also dismissed Shanto for 41 and again proved why he is one of the best spinners in the T20 format.

Towhid Hridoy and Shakib Al Hasan were looking to form a good partnership and carry Bangladesh to a fighting total, however Shakib was dismissed for only 8 runs by Marcus Stoinis. Then, the experienced Pat Cummins stepped up and dismissed Mahmudullah for only two runs and then dismissed Mahedi Hasan on the very next ball to leave Bangladesh at 122/7 after 18 overs.

Cummins then completed his hat-trick by taking the wicket of Hridoy on the first-ball of the 20th over and became only the second Australian bowler after Brett Lee to take a hat-trick in the T20 World Cup. It was also only the seventh hat-trick in T20 World Cup history. Cummins ended his quota of 4 overs with figures of 3/29. This magnificent spell restricted Bangladesh to a modest total of 140/8 in 20 overs.

In reply, Australian openers, Travis Head and David Warner started the innings brilliantly and took Australia over the score of 50 within the powerplay itself. Head lost his wicket to Rishad Hossain after playing a decent knock of 31 off 21 balls. Hossain dismissed Mitchell Marsh in his next over, however Warner was in no mood to stop. The Aussie smashed his second half-century of the tournament and Glenn Maxwell made a quick-fire 14 to make Australia reach the 100-run mark before rain interrupted the match.

With Australia being above the DL par score and the rain showing no signs to stop, the Aussies were declared as the winners of the match through DLS method. With this result, Australia remained unbeaten in the tournament making it five wins in a row. They are already the favorites to win the tournament and these impressive performances are again highlighting that.
