CWI Chief Executive defends Andre Russell, says the board cleared him to play Global T20 Canada as a batsman
In three matches that he has played in Global T20 Canada so far, Russell hasn’t bowled yet and was dismissed for a duck

Andre Russell seemed to have landed in trouble last week when just a few hours after withdrawing from India T20Is, he turned up for Vancouver Knights in the ongoing Global T20 Canada. But as per Johnny Grave, Cricket West Indies Chief Executive, it is a part of Russell’s rehabilitation. The 31-year-old all-rounder had withdrawn from the India series after he failed to recover from the knee injury.
“We cleared him fit to play in Canada as a batsman. To monitor his fitness every day, a couple of our physios are over in the GT20, so we’ve got that oversight with Andre and his knee,” Grave told ESPNcricinfo.
“But there’s a massive difference between playing in domestic cricket to international cricket. Our fans really want to see Andre Russell at a 100% while playing here against India: batting at 100%, bowling at 100%, fielding dynamically outside the circle at 100%,” he added.
The Jamaican all-rounder underwent knee surgery after being ruled out of World Cup 2019. In three matches that he has played in Global T20 Canada so far, Russell hasn’t bowled yet and was dismissed for a duck in the only ball he has played in the tournament. He isn’t a part of the ODI series against India and will continue to play the T20 tournament.
Russell’s knee issue has troubled him for long. It ruled him out of World Cup 2019 after just four matches, where he failed to make an impact. During IPL 2019 too, Russell was suffering from a knee issue but struggled his way through to a full season.

Meanwhile, India gained an unassailable lead in the three-match T20I series by winning the first two T20Is on Sunday played in Florida, USA. The third and the final T20I of the series will be played in Guyana, which will also host the first of the three ODIs.
