Joe Root faced intense scrutiny over his form during the ongoing Test series against India, with questions arising about his ability to adapt to the Bazball era of cricket that England has embraced. In the initial six innings of the series, Root, typically a formidable batter and a key figure in England’s lineup, struggled to make an impact, managing only 77 runs without a single half-century to his name. His shot selection came under particular criticism during this period. However, Root made a remarkable turnaround during the fourth Test in Ranchi, where he showcased his class with a well-crafted century.

Known for his prowess against India, Root has historically performed well in the country. Prior to this series, he had amassed 1118 runs in India, the most he has scored in any country outside England. Despite his past success, Root faced challenges adapting to the aggressive style of play required in the Bazball era, especially against the Indian bowling attack. Criticism peaked during the third Test in Rajkot, where a bold shot attempt resulted in his dismissal.

Responding to the doubts surrounding his form, Root, playing with a more natural approach and facing a Bumrah-less Indian attack, delivered a masterful century in the fourth Test. His innings, which saw England post 282 for seven on Day 1, earned praise from former cricketers AB de Villiers and Michael Vaughan. De Villiers commended Root for his composed century, emphasizing his ability to play the role of an anchor in the team, while Vaughan appreciated his sensible batting approach.

Root’s century, his 10th against India, cemented his reputation as a formidable opponent against the Indian team. With this century, he surpassed Steve Smith to become the player with the most centuries against India in Test cricket. Additionally, Root’s fifty-plus score marked his 20th against India, equalling the record held by the legendary Ricky Ponting.
