Former New Zealand batsman and India coach John Wright has been appointed as the president of Derbyshire County Cricket Club.
Wright played 82 Tests and 149 ODIs between 1978 and 1993, scoring a combined 9225 runs.
He is regarded as one of the finest batsmen to have played for Derbyshire and scored 14,969 runs for them between 1977 and 1988. “I hold Derbyshire very close to my heart and I am honoured to serve as Club President,” Wright told Derbyshire. “I enjoyed so many great times here as a player and as a coach, and I wish the current squad the very best as they continue to make great progress on the field.”
After retiring, Wright became India coach and led them to the final of the 2003 ODI World Cup. He later coached IPL franchise Mumbai Indians and in his first season in charge, led them to the title.
He later became their talent scout.
In 2017, he returned to Derbyshire as their T20 coach and guided them to their first T20 Blast quarterfinals in over a decade. Wright succeeds Harold Rhodes into the role.
“John is one of the greatest batsmen to ever play for Derbyshire. Even when his playing days ended, John kept a close relationship with the club and enjoyed success in his return as a coach.” Derbyshire chairman Ian Morgan said.
“His contribution and commitment to the Club over many years has been immense and I am delighted that he has accepted the role of Club President in this our 150th year.”
