ICC Champions Trophy 2013: Aaron Phangiso backs South Africa spinners to come good

South African left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso has said that his team’s spin-friendly approach will continue to play an important role in the remainder of the ICC Champions Trophy 2013.

Phangiso was part of the three-pronged spin attack in the Proteas’ 67-run win against Pakistan, with the conditions, along with team combinations likely to determine whether or not the same tactic is taken against the West Indies in Cardiff on Friday.

Stating that they always believed that seam is their main weapon, Phangiso however, said that they would be backing themselves in the Champions Trophy with the calibre of spinners that they have, adding that the decision to play three spinners against Pakistan was made according to the conditions. According to Phangiso, the decision for a three-pronged spin attack was not a risk as South Africa has three quality spinners in himself, JP Duminy and Robin Peterson, adding that the decision is a backing of their abilities.

As the second spin option to Robin Peterson, although Phangiso has spent a lot of time on the sidelines since making his debut against New Zealand in March, he however, said that he was mentally and physically prepared for the call-up in the previous match. Phangiso has only played two ODIs for South Africa, but has years of first-class cricket under his belt playing for the Nashua Titans and the Highveld Lions, the report added.
