England‘s massive victory over underdogs Fiji in the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2016 witnessed opening batsman Dan Lawrence smashing the third-highest individual score in an innings in the history of Under-19 cricket. Lawrence hammered a 150-ball 174 to propel England to a massive total of 371 for three in their stipulated 50 overs, with Fiji getting bowled out for a lowly 72 for England to record a 299-run win. Essex batsman and part-time leg-spinner Lawrence, who won the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his effort, also holds the record for the second-highest individual score in the history of the tournament, which is currently in 11th edition. England got off to a poor start after electing to bat, with Max Holden departing for 3 for England to lose their first wicket with just 22 runs on board. Lawrence however, added Jack Burnham (148 off 137 balls) to add 303 runs for the second wicket. Lawrence was on the verge of breaking both records when he was dismissed in the final over of the England innings.

Fiji, in reply, lost wickets in a tandem from the very first over of their innings, and never looked settled thereafter. Middle-order batsman Peni Vuniwaqa was the only batsman to offer any resistance whatsoever, scoring 36 runs off 74 balls with the help of six fours, helping Fiji at least cross the 50-run mark. Saqib Mahmood was the pick of the bowlers among the Englishmen, collecting three wickets for just two runs. Sam Curran, son of former Zimbabwean cricketer Kevin Curran, also picked three wickets though he conceded 22 runs.
