Sri Lanka scored 282 for five in 50 overs against India in the final match of Group A stage of the 2013 ICC Women’s World Cup in Mumbai on Tuesday. India need 251 runs to qualify for the Super Sixes of the tournament
Sri Lanka skipper Shashikala Siriwardene elected to bat first after winning the toss. However, India struck early as opener Chamari Atapattu edged Jhulan Goswami’s delivery to Mithali Raj standing at slips.
Sri Lanka batswomen showed more application from thereon as they added 117 runs for the second wicket. India’s bowling spearhead Goswami was meted with special disdain as they scored 35 runs off her first five overs.
However, Goswami came back hard as she struck twice and restricted the flow of runs in the death overs. Deepika Rasangika top-scored for Sri Lanka with 84 runs. Siriwardene and Yasoda Mendis also struck half-centuries to take Sri Lanka to a respectable total.
India missed Nagarajan Niranjana, India’s star performer with the ball in the opening game.
Shubhlakshmi Sharma, who was included in the team in place of Niranjana, gave away 52 runs off her nine overs.
