A five-wicket haul backed by a vital 18 from the experienced seam bowler Katherine Brunt helped England Women beat India Women by two wickets in the final ODI in Mumbai. Chasing 206 after Brunt’s 5/28, England won by eight wickets.
Brunt struck with the second ball of the game to bowl Jemimah Rodrigues for 0, but it was her four-wicket second spell that ultimately proved match-winning. Later, after England lost seven wickets, Brunt helped Georgia Elwiss (33*) get the visitors over the line in the 49th over.
India claimed the series with wins in the first two ODIs. (READ: Women cricketers to feature on Lord’s Honour Board)
Smriti Mandhana (66) and Poonam Raut (56) had put on 129 after Rodrigues’ dismissal, but Brunt returned to dismiss them both in the 29th over. She then had Mithali Raj caught behind for 7 and trapped Mona Meshram lbw for 0, which left India at 140/4.
That soon became 150/7 as Anya Shrubsole bowled Taniya Bhatia for 0 and Natalie Sciver found the edge off Jhulan Goswami’s bat on 1.
Deepti Sharma (27*) and Shikha Pandey (26) added 47 to get India past 200. Brunt, 33, ended with 5/28 from her ten overs.
Chasing 206, England were hurt by Goswami’s three early wickets but found resistance from skipper Heather Knight who made 47 off 63 balls and Danielle Wyatt who hit 56 off 82 balls. The pair put on 69 for the sixth wicket, and then Wyatt and Elwiss added 56 to get England closer to their target.
The pair kept the singles flowing and hit the odd boundary to ease the pressure, with their cutting, pulling and driving down the ground the stand-out feature.
Elwiss ended on 33 off 53 balls and Brunt contributed 18 off 20 in a match-clinching partnership of 30. With two runs needed off eight balls, Brunt pulled Poonam Yadav to midwicket and was out.
