IPL 2024: Dinesh Karthik To Play His Last IPL, Will Be Announcing Retirement From International Cricket As Well- Report

According to recent report Dinesh Karthik will be playing his last edition of IPL, following which it is highly probable that he will be bidding farewell to International cricket as well.

Dinesh Karthik, India’s wicketkeeper batter, is poised to make his final IPL participation in the 2024 season, which begins on March 22, and will decide whether to retire from international cricket after the lucrative T20 competition. The 38-year-old, who is now engaged with the Royal Challengers Bangalore, has been in all 16 IPL editions since 2008, missing only two matches.

“This 2024 edition will be his (Dinesh Karthik’s) last IPL. He will decide his international retirement after the IPL,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Karthik is one of the most experienced wicketkeeper batsmen in the IPL, having played for six different clubs.
He began his career with the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in 2008 and then joined Kings XI Punjab in 2011. He played the following two seasons with the Mumbai Indians before returning to Delhi in 2014 for a record Rs 12.5 crore.

He was signed by the Royal Challengers in 2015 for Rs 10.5 crore, and he went on to play for the Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017 before joining the Kolkata Knight Riders for four seasons.

He guided the Kolkata team to the IPL playoffs in 2018 but came fifth in 2019.
Karthik was released by KKR before of the IPL 2022 season and acquired by RCB for the second time for Rs 5.5 crore. He had a fantastic 2022 season with RCB, primarily playing as a finisher.

Karthik scored 330 runs in 16 matches that year, with an average of 55 and an explosive strike rate of 183.33, helping RCB reach the play-offs.

Karthik’s International Career

He has played 26 Tests since his debut against Australia in 2004, acquiring 1025 runs and taking 57 catches and six stumpings. He played his final Test in 2018.

Between 2004 and 2019, he scored 1752 runs in 94 One-Day Internationals, with 64 catches and 7 stumpings. 

Karthik’s last appearance for India was a T20I against Bangladesh in 2022, following his debut in the shortest format in 2006. He scored 686 runs in 60 T20Is, making 30 catches and 8 stumpings.

Karthik has appeared in 242 IPL matches since its inception, amassing 4516 runs at an average of 25.81 and a strike rate of 132.71, including 20 half-centuries. He has impacted 141 catches and 36 stumpings.
