Shreyas Iyer, the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders, might have to miss the first games of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024. According to the report bt The Times of India, the batter’s previous back injury has returned after he scored 95 runs for Mumbai versus Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy final. Iyer had surgery in 2023 for the same issue, and the new development may prevent him from playing in the opening few IPL 2024 matches.
“It is not looking good. It is the same back injury which has got aggravated. It is unlikely he will take the field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final. He is in danger of missing the initial matches of the IPL,” a source told Times Of India in the report.
Iyer views the IPL as a vital competition following his exclusion from the BCCI’s central contract list. The first match of the league is scheduled for March 23 in Kolkata between KKR and SRH

During his 95-run innings, Iyer experienced back spasms and required two examinations from the Mumbai team physiotherapist. Additionally, he did not play for Mumbai on Wednesday, and according to the source, there is very little chance that he will play again in the Ranji Trophy final.
Iyer had already voiced concerns regarding this ailment during the Test series against England which concluded recently.
“During the recently-held Test series against England at home, he had told the Indian team management about this injury troubling him again,” the source said.
But, NCA on the other hand had stated earlier that Shreyas Iyer was absolutely fit to play.
