South African-born seamer Jade Dernbach made a late bid for an England spot in next week’s opening Test against Sri Lanka when he took five wickets against the tourists on Friday.

Dernbach claimed 5-44 as Sri Lanka struggled to 266 all out in reply to England Lions’ 493-8 declared at Derby.

“Obviously we are all trying to push our own cases forward to the selectors,” said Dernbach in reference to the earlier batting of Eoin Morgan (193) and Samit Patel (119).

“We have four top-quality seamers vying for one position. It’s nice to put yourself on show, and coming out with five wickets has done my name no harm. It was good to show people what I’m capable of.”

Sri Lanka collapsed from 59 for none to 97 for six, but recovered thanks largely to Suraj Randiv (76 not out) to muster 266.
