Former Australia coach John Buchanan has quit as New Zealand director of cricket and will return to Australia.

“Buchanan is disappointed to be leaving at this time as he has enjoyed his work. Due to family circumstances, he has decided to return to Australia,” a statement from New Zealand Cricket said Friday.

Appointed in May 2011 by former New Zealand Cricket boss Justin Vaughan, Buchanan is understood to have a difficult relationship with current boss David White.

New Zealand Cricket said it respected Buchanan’s decision to return home and wished him well.
