With the appointment of Jonathan Atkieson as its chief executive officer, USA Cricket has satisfied one of the two essential conditions needed to stay eligible to participate in the ICC Associate program, as of August 1.
Earlier this month, the ICC “put on notice” the USAC for violating two standards.
One was that USAC did not have a CEO; the other was that USAC did not follow the governance guidelines established by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).
As per standard practice, all sport governing bodies must get the National Governing Body (NGB) designation, which is required for all sports included to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Cricket was approved to be included in the Los Angeles Games by the International Olympic Committee at its 141st Session and Executive Board meeting in Mumbai last year.
“USA Cricket has announced the appointment of Johnathan Atkeison as its new CEO, effective August 1st, 2024,” the USAC said on its website.
The most recent position that Atkeison held was Chief Operating Officer of USA Rugby. He brings more than 15 years of expertise with national governing bodies to USA Cricket.
“I’m honoured to join the team at USA Cricket. It’s an incredible time for the sport here in the United States with the historic performance of the men’s national team in the recent T20 World Cup, the completion of the second season of Major League Cricket, and the first opportunity to showcase cricket in the Olympics here on home soil during the LA28 games,” Atkinson said.
“Our goal is to build a world-class organisation to capitalise on that momentum, and firmly establish cricket’s position in the American sporting landscape,” he added.
