Kieron Pollard, the West Indies captain, has suggested players to make the most of this period of break in cricket and indulge in self-introspection and work on their fitness

The West Indies captain, under whom the team lost the ODI series to Sri Lanka 0-3 but bounced back to win the T20Is 2-0 feels that although this isn’t the best time for humanity with the COVID-19 pandemic strengthening its grip globally, there is after all a silver lining in this for the athletes.

“It is a good time for introspection, a good time for reflection, a good time to look at where you are as an individual in your career and what you want to achieve going forward,” he said on I955 FM’s ISports radio show.

“You have to take this time in order to do that and also keep yourself in good physical shape, and mentally as well, because when the bell rings and they say ‘ok, everything is back to normal and we need to go on tour’, it might not be enough time to be prepared, but you as an individual have to be prepared mentally in order for you to try to perform at your best.”

Pollard, the most experienced player in T20 cricket, was earlier this month ruled out of the Pakistan Super League where he was supposed to play for Peshawar Zalmi with a niggle in his right thigh. He recently reached 10000 runs in T20 cricket in his 500th game. 2019 was Pollard’s best year in terms of numbers in T20 cricket, amassing over 1400 runs in the format.

As for cricket in the West Indies in concerned, everything is on hold. On March 15, Cricket West Indies (CWI), acting on the recommendation of its Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), took the decision to suspend all CWI tournaments and face-to-face group meetings, from Monday March 16, for a minimum of 30 days.
