Matthew Wade has officially announced his retirement from the realm of first-class cricket. This decision comes ahead of the highly anticipated Sheffield Shield final, where Wade will take to the field for his last red-ball assignment in Perth. Despite his commitment to the Gujarat Titans in the upcoming 2024 IPL season, Wade prioritized his loyalty to Tasmania, ensuring his presence in the summit clash of Australia’s premier domestic red-ball tournament.
While his departure from first-class cricket is marked, Wade remains dedicated to the white-ball format, pledging to continue representing Australia, Tasmania, and the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. With a career spanning 17 years and 165 first-class matches, including 36 Test appearances for Australia, Wade reminisced on the pinnacle of his journey – donning the Baggy Green and representing his country in red-ball cricket. As he aims to secure his fifth Sheffield Shield title, Wade sets his sights on clinching his first with Tasmania, cherishing the memories and achievements garnered throughout his remarkable career.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges that the long-form game provides, and although I will continue to play white ball cricket, wearing the Baggy Green while playing for my country remains a highlight of my career,” Wade said
Tasmania’s men’s head coach Jeff Vaughan said, “I would like to personally thank and congratulate Matthew for all he has done for Tasmania and Australia in red-ball cricket, he was always professional, and never shied away from the contest. While his career with our Shield squad may be coming to an end, we look forward to still having him around our group in white ball cricket for the coming years playing for the Tigers, and in purple for the Hurricanes.”
