In a desperate attempt to represent T20 cricket in the olympics, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to push forward in order to make it happen as soon as possible. After being represented in the Olympics in 1900 during Paris Olympic Games, cricket has been till date absent in the most phenomenal sporting event of the world, and there have been quite a few attempts and calls being made in order to make the game return in the Olympic stage. MCC is the proclaimed parent and guardian of the game, ever since it was formed in 1787 at Lord’s, reports Reuters.
“The [MCC] committee is unanimous in its belief that every effort should be made to make cricket an Olympic sport, and urges all governing bodies around the world to get behind such a bid,” said MCC in a statement on Tuesday. T20 cricket should be included in Olympics
“The Olympics is a fundamental opportunity for cricket — in both the men’s and women’s game — and with a global reach, such a presence would expose the game positively to new markets,” the statement added. Cricket at Commonwealth Games and Olympics
“The committee urges the ICC Board to reconsider its position and take a decision that it believes is in the best interests of the global game. This would need to be done in the next 12 months for cricket to have a chance of being included in the 2024 Olympics,” the MCC quoted. Olympics: ICC against dilution of cricket
As the ICC had confirmed until this year that the upcoming two editions of the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019 and 2023 would comprise of 10 teams, rather than the regular 14 teams until the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. “The organisation of a 10-team ICC Cricket World Cup for 2019 and 2023 is a retrograde step. To limit future tournaments to 10 teams, albeit with qualification methods put in place, is a handbrake for the development of the sport,” siad MCC. ICC, MCC make fresh moves to have cricket part of Olympics
