Former Australian pacer Merv Hughes was seen playing cricket after a long time as he accompanied his two teenage sons at Melbourne. The veteran ignored the scorching heat and got into the field for the team Footscray Edgewater fourth XI for which his sons Tim (18) and Scott (14) play. Hughes bowled three overs without taking a wicket and gave away 6 runs. While Tim took a wicket and bowled a maiden, Scott bowled just one over. Tim also went on to score 12 runs as his team put up a score of 298 for 6 but lost the game later on.
In an interview to Crocmedia as quoted by cricket.com.au, Hughes said, “I’m going okay, I only bowled three overs. It was hard work, I’m not as young as I used to be or as fit as I ever was. I struggled a bit. With the West Indies game against the Cricket Victoria XI, three of the Footscray boys got called up, we were a little bit short in the fourths. Everyone goes up a grade, myself and my youngest son were drawn into the Footscray fourth XI.”
He went on adding, “In all honesty, I think it was 68 degrees.”

Tim, his elder son, said, “He went okay today. He had an absolute sitter put down at second slip” while Merv countered him saying, “When a bloke stands at second slip and drops off a catch off you then takes a harder caught and bowled, I might’ve said ‘Oh you take them off your own bowling’.”
