Former England batsman Michael Vaughan has slammed the Ben Stokes-led team’s ‘Bazball’ strategy following a disappointing performance in the just finished third Test against India in Rajkot. On Sunday, India defeated England by 434 runs in their largest Test triumph to date. In their second innings, England were bowled out for 122 after chasing an implausible 557. Before England’s batting meltdown on Day 4, Vaughan claimed that their ‘Bazball’ technique had been exposed under Indian conditions.

“I’m afraid Bazball was revealed this week. It’s wonderful when it works. The first Test was on a field that did everything, so I got Bazball on that surface, but not on the subsequent two, when the pitches have been completely fine to just play with positive purpose and common sense,” Vaughan told the BBC.

Before India closed up the proceedings in the last session, Vaughan prophesied that England will face humiliation for the first time in the ‘Bazball’ era.

“Let’s be honest: this might be messy for England. They have lost games during the Bazball era, but they have never been completely crushed. “This could be the first,” Vaughan stated on air.

Vaughan also made a social media post pointing this up.

“Even when this England team have lost in the last 2 years you have always been able to take positives .. or they haven’t been hammered .. this is looking like a wake up call that surely sends a message you can’t just play one way against quality teams,” Vaughan had written on Twitter.

Vaughan also stated that “common sense” should prevail in the English camp, implying that ‘Bazball’ may not work everywhere.

England captain Stokes commented on his team’s defeat, saying, “Ben Duckett played a great innings; that was the tone we wanted to create with the bat. [First-inning approach] It was about spotting opportunities to score and add to their total. With how the wicket was moving, we tried to push it as hard as we could, but it doesn’t always work. We are most concerned with opinions in the dressing room. We’re down 2-1 in the series, but there are still two games left. We leave this game behind, knowing we must win the next two to win the series.”
