MS Dhoni, India’s most celebrated captain, stepped down as the limited-overs captain of the side. According to reports, he has clarified that he will remain available for selection. After retirement from Tests in December 2014, Dhoni continued to lead in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20I). His reign as Indian captain began in the ICC World T20 2007. It was the inaugural T20 World Cup and he led a young bunch to the title. The Dhoni-era almost lasted a decade. He went on to lead India to victories in World Cup 2011 and Champions Trophy 2013, thus becoming the first (and till now, only) captain to win all three ICC titles.
Dhoni had taken over ODI captaincy from Rahul Dravid in a bilateral series against Australia. He went on to lead India in 199 ODIs, winning 110 and losing 74. Four matches have ended in a tie. He is the only Indian captain to have registered more than a hundred ODI wins with a success ratio of 59.5. He has also led India in 72 T20Is, winning 41 of them. After India’s elimination from the ICC World T20 in 2016, Dhoni had expressed desire to play the World Cup 2019.

Dhoni, 35, has played 283 ODIs and 73 T20Is for India since debuting against Bangladesh in Chittagong in December 2004. He is India’s most-capped international captain, having led India in all formats. He has 178 wins to his name and is only behind Ricky Ponting, who has 220 wins to his name, making Dhoni cricket’s second most successful skipper across formats.
BCCI CEO Rahul Johri was quoted as saying, “On the behalf of every Indian cricket fan and the BCCI, I would like to thank MS Dhoni for his outstanding contribution as the captain of the Indian team across all formats. Under his leadership, Indian team has touched new heights and his achievements will remain etched forever in the annals of Indian cricket.”
