New Zealand pacer Tim Southee dismissed Kumar Sangakkara and Tilakaratne Dilshan in quick succession to gave his side the advantage at the end of second day’s play in the Colombo Test.

Having bowled out the Kiwis for 412, the Lankans had a horrendous start as three big wickets with just 12 runs on the board.

First to fall was Dilshan. Southee bowled a straight delivery that went through Dilshan’s bat and pad to crash onto the stumps as the latter tried to play a straight drive without moving his feet.

Two deliveries later, a pumped up Southee followed this up with a short pitched delivery to new man Sangakkara, who failed to get entirely behind the ball and ended up giving a catch to Trent Boult at fine leg.

Next to go for Mahela Jayawardene who chased a wide delivery outside off-stump without getting to the pitch of the ball and ended up giving a simple catch to Kane Williamson at gully.

With seven overs still remaining in the day, bad light stopped play and the umpires called it a day with Sri Lanka at 43 for three with Tharanga Paranavitana and Angelo Mathews at the crease. Sri Lanka trail New Zealand by 369 runs.

Earlier, Rangana Herath came back strongly after lunch as he picked up two more Kiwi wickets, leaving them on 396 for eight at Tea on the second day of the second and final Test against New Zealand at the P. Sara Oval in Colombo on Monday.

The left-arm spinner removed debutant Todd Astle who failed to read the latter’s carrom ball and offered no shot to a ball that pitched slightly outside his off-stump and came back in to hit him in line.

Next to fall was Doug Bracewell, giving Suraj Randiv his first wicket of the game. Bracewell came down the track to clear the ground but failed to middle it and ended up giving a catch to Herath at deep mid-wicket.

Herath then cleaned up Southee who went for a blind heave and was no where near the ball as it clipped the top of middle and off-stump as the Kiwis were down to 374 for eight.

Meanwhile, Daniel Flynn at the other end brought up his half century but is running out of partners to revive the Kiwi innings. Flynn and Jeeten Patel were in the middle when Tea was called for.

Earlier, Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson added 262 for the third wicket to put their team in a strong position before they fell in the space of 14 runs, trapped leg-before while attempting to sweep.

Part-time off-spinner Tillakaratne Dilshan bowled wicket-keeper Kruger van Wyk for a duck as New Zealand lost three wickets in the morning session after adding 75 to their overnight total of 223-2.

Brief Scores: New Zealand 412 (Ross Taylor 142, Kane Williamson 135; Rangana Herath 6 for 103) lead Sri Lanka 43 for 3 ( Angelo Mathews 20*, Tharanga Paranavitana 9*; Tim Southee 2 for 16) by 369 runs.
