MS Dhoni, who led India for 9 years, shook the cricket fraternity when he announced his resignation as the country’s limited-overs captain on Wednesday. As soon as the news broke, social media erupted with emotional messages pouring in from former cricketers and teammates. However, Virat Kohli as well as Dhoni’s teammate and CSK partner in crime Ravichandran Ashwin were yet to tweet about the resignation. But Kohli and Ashwin are never shy to express themselves, and eventually dropped a message. Ashwin, who was Dhoni’s go-to man when the team was in desperate times, praised Dhoni’s captaincy and wittily asked him to ‘wield the willow wild’.

Ashwin also mentioned about his conversation with Dhoni during the ICC Champions Trophy, a game that went down to the wire. Ashwin had made his Test debut under Dhoni in 2011. Dhoni and Ashwin last played together during the 2-T20I series against West Indies in the USA. Although Dhoni’s last ODI series as captain was against New Zealand, Ashwin was rested ahead of the Test series against England. Moreover, Ashwin played under Dhoni for CSK in IPL until season 8. They now play for Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS).
