Sachin Tendulkar is great poster for humility: Asif Iqbal
Former Pakistan captain Asif Iqbal regarded Sachin Tendulkar as a great poster for humility and recounted some of the memories of the Little Master playing at Sharjah. Former Pakistan captain Asif Iqbal regarded Sachin Tendulkar as a great poster for humility and recounted some of the memories of the Little Master playing at Sharjah. Tendulkar played a few matches for Iqbal’s Cricketers Benefit Fund Series (CBFS) which provided him a platform to play some of his best innings at the venue.
“Tendulkar was not only one of the greatest batsman, but also a great poster for humility after creating all possible records,” Iqbal was quoted as saying by Gulf News.
Recalling the famous Tendulkar sandstorm; his innings of 143, he said, “During that innings against Australia when a sand storm disrupted the Indian chase, his team was struggling, but the late Raj Singh Dungarpur’s [former BCCI president and selector] remark still echoes in my ears. He said that ‘as long as Sachin is batting, India has a chance’. The rest is history.”
Regarding Tendulkar’s participation in CBFS matches, Iqbal said that players from India and Pakistan were the main attraction. “It is fair to say that the participation of teams from India and Pakistan were the main attractions that gave the Sharjah events the importance they deserved and, of course, top players including Sachin along with many other great players made CBFS a very popular brand,” he said.
Reacting to the future of the game without Tendulkar, Iqbal added, “I am sure it is the million-dollar question. It is likely someone else may take the place of Sachin the batsman, but to take his place as a great sportsman will be a huge achievement.
“In fact, before Sachin, there have been great players from the sub-continent and when they reached retirement we used to wonder who would replace them. From [Sunil] Gavaskar to Sachin, it is safe to say that these two will always be remembered for what they have achieved. Well played, Sachin, and we all pray for you to attain the same heights in whatever you take up after taking your pads off,” Iqbal concluded.
