Rain plays spoilsport as Afghanistan’s one-day tie vs MCC is abandoned at Lord’s

Persistent rain had the last laugh as MCC’s exhibition one-day tie against Afghanistan at Lord’s on Tuesday was washed out. English batsman Sam Hain and his countryman Samit Patel played vital knocks of 76 and 53 respectively, guiding Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) to 217 for 6 in 40 overs. Earlier, MCC skipper Brendon McCullum won the coin toss and elected to bat first. McCullum were off to a shaky start. With just six runs on the board, McCullum departed for a mere 5. 11 runs later, it was Misbah-ul-Haq, who fell for 7. It was then the pair of Hain and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who took charge. However, Chanderpaul was unfortunately retired hurt for 22, therefore forcing in Samit, before the rains interrupted play.

After the play was resumed with the game being reduced to 40 overs per side, it was Hain and Samit, who took complete charge of the innings. The pair put up a 150-run stand for the third wicket, as Hain brought up his half-century. However, he fell for a healthy score of 76 when they were 167, while 9 runs later, it was Chris Read who perished.

With everyone rooting for Samit to bat until the end, at the score of 192, he too fell right after scoring his half-century for 53. Eventually, MCC finished their innings for 217 for 6.
