A Samit Patel half-century took England to 521 all-out at lunch on Day Two of their third warm-up match against Haryana at the Sardar Patel Stadium B Ground, Ahmedabad. Patel’s knock of 67 from 105 deliveries all but secured his selection for the first Test against India starting November 15. The burly 27-year-old has already scored century and a half-century against India A and Mumbai, respectively, in the earlier warm-up ties.
After resuming their innings at 408 for three at the start of the day’s play, England lost Ian Bell (62) to medium pacer Sachin Rana early. Matt Prior then shared 69-run partnership with Patel to take England past 500 before perishing to offbreak of Jayant Yadav. The Haryana, who finished with figures of four for 110, then teamed up with his captain and fellow tweaker Amit Mishra (four for 67) to clean up the English tail.
The fact that England lost eight wickets to spin will not please the visitors, after off-spinner Graeme Swann had earlier claimed that Indian tweakers will not be a threat to English batsmen on the turning tracks of the sub-continent.
Brief Scores: England 521 all out (Samit Patel 67, Ian Bell 62; Amit Mishra 4 for 67, Jayant Yadav 4 for 110) vs Haryana.
