Sri Lanka have selected Suraj Randiv for the upcoming One-day international (ODI) series against Pakistan ending the off spinner’s three-year international exile. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced a 15-member squad with all-rounder Thisara Perera and fast bowler Dhammika Prasad who missed the concluded series against South Africa, also included.
Randiv last played a one-dayer for Sri Lanka in August 2011 against Australia. The spinner has picked up 33 wickets in 28 one-day matches. The series starts on Saturday in Hambantota. Sri Lankans have had a phenomenal year in the shorter formats of the game in 2014 with three major high points that punctuated their dexterity and know-how to find the personnel to take them across the finish line.
The year started with a comprehensive wins against Bangladesh in the ODIs and the T20s and then went on to win the Asia Cup in style, also on Bangladesh soil. Then they went on to win their first World Cup in 17 years by ouyplaying India in the final. The winning momentum continued with a historic maiden Test series win in England. The Lankans also won the ODIs 3-2 in the Old Blighty. South Africa, however humbled the Island Nation in their den by winning thier first ever ODI series in county. South Africa clinched the Test series too.
Sri Lanka have gone for a full strength side against Pakistan, with all the veterans in tow, including Mahela Jayawardene who recently retired from Test cricket. The brilliant Rangana Herath, fresh after his stumpendous 14-wicket haul in the second Test at Colombo, is also part of the ODI squad after Sachitra Senanayake’s indefinite suspention from the game after being found guity of a suspect bowling action.
