The Supreme Court (SC) of India ordered to remove Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke respectively on Monday. Thakur had recently conceded that the BCCI will have to put everything on hold till SC gives its verdict on January 3 which turned out in his axing from the post a little over one year after his tenure started. BCCI has been at loggerheads with SC and it removed Thakur from his post, and served him with a formal notice of contempt of court for lying under oath. Also, the apex court removed Shirke from his post in BCCI office with immediate effect. SC was expected to deliver its verdict today on the Justice RM Lodha Committee’s recommendation that the board’s office-bearers should be replaced by an independent observer.

“One should understand that when the order of the Supreme Court, which is the highest court of the land, has come, it has to be obeyed by all. It is the law of the land. Nobody can escape it,” Lodha told.”There were obstructions. There were impediments. We fixed the timeline that was not adhered to. We submitted three reports before the Supreme Court, even then it was not implemented”, concluded Lodha. (Inputs from AFP).

As expected, Twitter went berserk as soon as the news went viral.

The order comes after judges also slapped restrictions on the BCCI’s accounts last year over its failure to implement a series of reforms recommended by a panel headed by a former top judge, Rajendra Mal Lodha. Responding to the latest judgement, Lodha said that it was an inevitable consequence of the board’s foot-dragging.
