India finished Day 1 on 307/6 with skipper Virat Kohli falling three short of a century.

Joe Root’s decision to bowl under a bit of cloud cover has not gone to plan for England, with Virat Kohli’s 97 and his century-stand with Ajinkya Rahane (81) turning a tough spot into a position from which India can push for a potentially match-winning total. At 307/6 at stumps on day one of the third Test at Trent Bridge, with the debutant Rishabh Pant looking very comfortable on 22 off 32 balls, India will have genuine designs on batting England out of the match.

That they are in this position owed plenty to the fourth-wicket partnership between Kohli and Rahane, worth 159. For the last time two Indian batsman put on as many, look back to 2002. The pair had joined for the first ball of the afternoon session, with India having lost Cheteshwar Pujara on the stroke of lunch to leave India 82/3. It was an uncharacteristic dismissal from Pujara, caught on the hook at long leg, and it left Kohli and Rahane to set about reviving the innings after three wickets fell down for the addition of 22 runs.
