What is common between Yuvraj Singh and Chris Gayle? Both are star cricketers, both are southpaws. The words style, elegance, flamboyance and of course the massive sixes come to mind whenever there is a mention of these two. Both of them love to play attacking game and tear apart the opposition bowling. Both are fun-loving inside the field as well as outside it. And interestingly, both have also been a part of the same team for a brief while, when Yuvraj was with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for a single season of Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2014.
But there is another thing the two share in common — the inclination for social causes. Yuvraj has had a roller-coaster recent past, as just after winning the World Cup with the Indian team in 2011 and playing central part in it with his Man-of-the-Series performance, he was diagnosed with cancer. It was like the whole world had came crashing for him. But the fighter that he is. Yuvraj braved the odds, fought the battle against the dreaded disease and made a comeback to the cricket field. Ever since, he has been in and out of the team. But the entire experience has made him a compassionate man.

He has since been running the ‘YouWeCan Foundation’, a charity organisation for the cancer patients wherein he not only assists the patients of this disease with healthcare facilities and treatment, but also takes care of the education of young cancer victims. Similarly, the colourful cricketer from the Caribbean, Gayle too runs a charitable organisation in the name of ‘The Chris Gayle Foundation’, which works with young people, namely in areas of deprivation and disadvantage. From time to time, Gayle organises fundraising activities like charity cricket matches among others so that he can keep his cause running. Not only this, he even gets involved with charity work of fellow cricketers.
A recent example of this came to the fore when Yuvraj launched his fashion label ‘YWC Fashion’ clothing line in a gala event in Mumbai. Gayle, who was already in Chennai, India to honour his commitments to the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), made it a point to attend his good friend Yuvraj’s event. Gayle not only attended the event, but also walked the ramp for the fashion show organised in the evening. The show was choreographed by designers Shantanu and Nikhil, with whom Yuvraj has collaborated for the initiative. Here is the video of Gayle walking the ramp. It was shared by Yuvraj’s official Facebook account.

It is notable here that though ‘YWC Fashion’ is a commercial initiative, the profit made by the label shall be used to educate the cancer patients and also to provide them with best of the treatment, which is otherwise costly and out of the common man’s reach. Off the field too the two cricketers are sharing similar fortune, as both are running out of their country’s respective Test and ODI sides and are being considered only for the T20Is. While Yuvraj was a part of India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2016, Gayle was a part of the recent two-match T20I series against India in the United States of America (USA).
