Wayne Parnell was on Wednesday released from the South African squad for the ICC World T20 2014 for attending a mandatory court appearance on ‘drug-related charges’ in Mumbai.
According to Sports24, the charges were put on the South African all-rounder during the 2012 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament.
The 24-year-old has denied any wrongdoing, and was released on bail after a court appearance in Mumbai last year.
In March last year, a Special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court gave a copy of the charge sheet filed in a ‘rave party’ case to the accused, including Indian cricketer Rahul Sharma and actor couple Apoorva Agnihotri and Shilpa Agnihotri.
Mumbai Police had on March 6 filed the charge sheet in the case after which the court had summoned all the accused. Parnell was showed as a wanted accused in the charge sheet.
Both Rahul Sharma and Parnell represented the Pune Warriors India in the 2012 edition of the Twenty20 competition.
Donne Commins, Parnell’s manager said, “Wayne has been called to appear before the court in India purely for procedural purposes in relation to the courts ongoing administration of the case concerned. Our understanding is that there will be no substantive inquiries made of him at the hearing, nor will the matter be progressed otherwise than as a matter of procedure.”
South African team manager Mohammed Moosajee said, “We were made aware before the T20 World Cup that Wayne would have to travel to India to appear in court as a matter of procedure and we have made provision for this in our planning.”
Moosajee added, “It’s unfortunate to lose him for a game in the middle of an important tournament him but we must respect the law. Furthermore, Wayne has expressed no wrongdoing so we hope that the case can be concluded as soon as possible.”
Parnell will rejoin the South African squad in Bangladesh on Friday morning.
