West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) President Dave Cameron has spoken in favour of having cricket feature in the Olympics in the future. He said the T20I format would fit very well in the Olympics game and would help to grow the game outside traditional strongholds. He however admitted that the possibility of this happening is very bleak since the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), two of the Big Three of world cricket administration, are vehemently opposed to the idea for personal reasons. “I do support T20s in the Olympics, I think it will appeal to a global audience, so having it there will be great for the sport,” Cameron told Trinidad Guardian. “Another benefit of having T20s on the Olympic set up is that the smaller countries have an opportunity to compete in the format,” Cameron added. “It is very difficult to get in because even in the cricket environment, the other big countries will have to agree. Some of the bigger countries are not in favour so this makes it very hard,” said Cameron in reference to the ECB and BCCI’s opposition to having cricket feature in the Olympic Games. According to Cameron, cricket must make a headstart to get into the Olympics by first making it into regional multi-game tournaments such as the Pan-Am games. “We have to start by getting cricket into the Pan Am Games and similar organisations first to see how well it fits in and then we can take it from there,” Cameron concluded.
