Ellyse Perry has batted her way to 84 not out on day one of the Women's Ashes Test at Taunton, thus helping Australia into position of dominance against hosts England. At stumps on Thursday, England's hopes of regaining the Women's Ashes has receded significantly with Australia looking ominous on 265/3. Perry was the top-scorer with 84* having put on an unbeaten 105 with Rachael Haynes, batting on 54. With inclement weather expected today, England's chances of succeeding in this must-win one-off Test of the points-based, multi-format Ashes have been hit hard. (READ: England include Kirstie Gordon for must-win game versus Australia) Australia opted to bat and lost Nicole Bolton for 6, bowled by Katherine Brunt, but a steady supply of hit-me deliveries allowed the Southern Stars to make good progress. England's second success came via the debutant Kirstie Gordon, who bowled Alyssa Healy for 54. Australia captain Meg Lanning was dropped on 26 by Heather Knight and progressed to 57 before she was third out, bowled by Sophie Ecclestone. Perry and Haynes, who scored her second Test fifty soon before stumps, carried Australia to a dominant close. Ecclestone was later forced off the field for some time after she fell on her shoulder, and England were further depleted when their opener Tammy Beaumont was hit on the thumb and sent for an X-ray. Brief scores: Australia Women 265/3 (Perry 84*, Haynes 54*, Healy 58, Lanning 57) vs England Women
